Jeremy Saulnier

Rebel Ridge – Jeremy Saulnier (2024)

A positive surprise. Clicking through Netflix for something to watch, I found what I thought was an old thriller. It is perhaps a bit of an old style thriller, but it is fairly knew.

The black Terry is driven off his bike when on his way to bail out a nephew. The other party is a police car and soon the money that Terry had in his bag for the bail, is confiscated. Terry has walked into a swamp of a corrupt local law enforcement.

But Terry is not just any commoner, he is an elite mariner who calmly sets out to set right the wrongs of the community where he happened to bike into. Rather than making a hip supersoldier shootout film, Saulnier created a slow thriller with an interesting story, a descent atmosphere and slowly rising tension. Not bad at all.

Blue Ruin – Jeremy Saulnier (2013)

IMDb.com

A slow and minimalist thriller in which a man goes after the killer of his parents after the killer is released. The story is slightly different from what you may expect, but it contains no real surprises.

The atmosphere is bleak, moody and descent.

Not a masterpiece, but a good film to watch some time.

Green Room – Jeremy Saulnier (2015)

A punk group has a concert gone wrong, almost nobody showed up. The organiser sets up another concert, so the band drives to the other location. This appears to be a remote location with a different audience, more skinheads. The band brilliantly opens with the Dead Kennedy’s song against a certain kind of punks. The audience likes the rest of the set better.

After the show one of the members sees something that he had better not, so the band is directed back to the dressing room waiting for the police. The people of the venue have other ideas with the band than they hoped though.

“Green Room” has an alright story, but overall is a not too strong thriller that tries to lean towards horror.
