Tras El Cristal * Agustí Villaronga (1987)

Like you see more often with Spanish thrillers, the story of “In A Glass Cage” is somewhat overdone to add shock value or something. Klaus used to be an experimental doctor during the war, a Mengele or Menecke kind of character, but worse. Getting paralised, Klaus ends up in an elaborate respiration machine that keeps him alive. One of his test subjects looks up Klaus in his house many years later apparently with two goals, the first to have Klaus experience what he did to his victims and second to learn from him. A perhaps not too original thriller unfolds that grows darker and darker as Angelo’s maddness reaches its peak. The atmosphere is well-done and the film certainly withstood time well. Maybe not a masterpiece, but a very good classic thriller nonetheless.
