Looking at the cover I expected one of these hip, British crime comedies. An amusing genre that wore about several years ago. On the contrary, “This Is England” is a raw drama about skinheads in some remote British village. The first part is quite funny with nice verbal and physical fighting among youths. When the leader of the local skinhead group returns from prison, the group splits into a serious and a not-so-serious part. “This Is England” shows the background of youths rolling in a ‘polital right’ direction with the Falklands war on the background and the growing awareness of immigration, but also shows the paradoxal position in which they navigate themselves. “This Is England” is a typical, British film and a nice one too. It was even followed by a mini series it seems.
